If you plan on traveling with your furry friend to South Africa, it’s important to note that all dogs and cats must be registered and flown as manifest cargo. Unfortunately, they cannot be transported as excess baggage. Additionally, veterinary officials from the Directorate Veterinary Services are unable to verify paperwork at the passenger terminals in O.R.Tambo (Johannesburg) and Cape Town International Airports. Therefore, pets can only be disembarked through the cargo terminals at these airports.
For cats, there are no requirements for blood testing or quarantine when entering South Africa.
However, for dogs, it’s mandatory to have blood testing done upon arrival in South Africa. Additionally, dogs originating from certain countries will need to undergo quarantine upon arrival. The full list of non-quarantine countries can be found in the requirements for pets entering South Africa.
